History and Development of the Company Metso was created as the result of the merger of Valmet and Rauma in July 1999. The new combined company was initially given the name Valmet-Rauma Corporation. The name was changed to Metso Corporation in August 1999. Valmet traces its origins back to the industrial plants established in the 1920s and 1930s to meet the needs of the Finnish Armed Forces. These industrial plants were joined to form a conglomerate, which was formally incorporated as a limited liability company in 1950.
